Stronger Families Project

Submitted by neely.mcewan on Thu, 01/28/2021 - 12:05

The Stronger Families Project provides virtual family classes to the community focusing on building the strengths and resiliencies that each family already has, and improving their daily family life. The classes focus on such topics as communication, positive discipline, problem solving, bonding, and establishing family values and rituals.

The program is a FREE community resource to all and is offered to anyone and everyone located anywhere in Utah. Sessions for the whole family in English are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6:30-8pm, as well as a Spanish session for the whole family, on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8pm. The first 30 minutes of the night will be spent learning as a family, and the final 60 minutes will be a parents only class to discuss specific topics. The program runs for eight sessions and families are encouraged to attend each weekly session so that they may receive a graduation certificate at the end of session 8.

A weekly drawing is also held for participants who arrive promptly. See the attached flyer (English and Spanish) for more information as well as information on how to register.

Congratulations to Wrestlers: Congratulations to our wrestling team who competed in the district finals today!

Fun and Games with the Counselors: Starting on January 19, students will notice a new class on their Canvas page called "Fun and Games with the Counselors." Each week students can do a fun assignment and submit it to be entered into a drawing for a goodie bag. You read that correctly, a goodie bag full of goodies! The goal of these activities and assignments is to learn more about emotional health and coping skills. Each week there will be a new lesson. Students don't have to do the assignments every week but will only be entered for the drawing on weeks they participate. Did I mention there will be goodie bags?! For questions, contact Mrs. Johnson in the counseling office at cameo.johnson@nebo.edu.

Resource for Students with Anxiety: Parents, we have a new resource available for students who may be struggling with anxiety or stress. It is a small group that will meet weekly to discuss and work on ways to cope with anxiety. For more information please contact your student's counselor:

Our own Nikki Lamoreaux, math teacher, was published and featured in the National Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12 (MTLT) publication.

Teaching is a Journey provides space for PK-12 teachers of mathematics to connect with other mathematics teachers through their stories that lend personal and professional support. In the January issue, junior high school mathematics teacher, Nikki Lamoreaux, shares how she incorporated the principles from a three-year professional development program focused on comprehensive mathematics instruction into her classroom.

Nikki explained, “You can do this. It is basically just my story of seeing that the students are totally capable of being amazing problem solvers. Teachers have the ability to make their classroom the place that students can become the problem solvers. If teachers have the right mind set, they can become that teacher. It is just magical.”

Changes to Quarantine: There have been some changes made to our procedures dealing with COVID cases.  In the past, when a student tested positive and was at school during their contagious time, we had to quarantine all students that were in close contact with that person. Now, as long as all students wear their masks, we will not have to quarantine those that have been exposed at school. We will however continue to notify parents for their own information if the student has been in close contact, but we will not require the student to quarantine if they were wearing a mask according to health department guidelines. This is great news!

Deadline to Switch to Remote or At-School Learning: One last friendly reminder that if you want to switch to remote or at-school learning you must do this week. If you would like to make a change and haven’t already done so, click on THIS SURVEY to submit your decision and contact your students school counselor. If you would like to stay with your current choice, please do not fill out the survey.
