The Spanish for Native/Heritage Speakers class has just completed their first semester. This is the group that is inaugurating this course at Salem Junior High as the course is new to the school. Students are in the class to improve their first language because multiple studies have shown that a strong foundation in one's first language (L1) significantly contributes to successful second language (L2) acquisition. Studies also indicate that growth in the first language directly supports learning a new language; this is often attributed to the development of cognitive skills like pattern recognition and language awareness that transfer across languages, allowing learners to better identify structures in the new language when they have a strong grasp of their native tongue.
