Congratulations to Holly Hickman who won first place in a school art contest run by Mr. Shaffer and the art department. The theme for the contest was Spartan Strong. Cooper Christiansen took third place and Paris Johnson placed second. Holly's piece along with her statement wowed the judges.

Here is Holly's statement:

The title of my artwork is "Victorious." It's a semi-realistic drawing done in pen ink using the inking techniques. The main subject of this drawing is the boy holding a hawk and a Spartan flag. My drawing expresses a personal victory, as the boy is standing over his "demons." Salem itself inspired me in this drawing, that is why I included Mt. Nebo in the background, the hawk to represent the Salem Hills SkyHawks, and the flag with the Salem Junior High logo on it. My goal for this artwork is to represent Salem, but also to challenge myself as an artist. This drawing was definitely a challenge, and it really showed me what I can do, and where I am as far as my skill level.

Holly won an Amazon gift card and will have her work on display at the district office.
