Tate Palmer and Oakley Palfreyman were awarded the Utah County Great Kids Award from the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce on April 30th. Oakley and Tate were given a cash award of $100.00. Congratulations Tate and Oakley!
Did you know many students from Salem Hills High School and Salem Junior High raise and exhibit animals at Junior Livestock Shows around the state every year? We have students showing steers, lambs and hogs locally this week. The local auction is on May 3 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. Now is a great time to fill your freezer and support the youth of our community. The cost is listed below.
Interested in improving your drawing skills over the summer? Nebo School District is offering a 2-week drawing class in June. There is a $25 material fee. Registration begins May 12th. See the flier or contact Ms. Magnusson for more details.
We are taking nominations now for three openings for parents on the School Community Council. This council meets once per month and helps to make decisions for the School Improvement Plan and determine the best uses of the Utah State Trustlands funds. You may nominate yourself or anyone else who has a student who will be going to Salem Junior High for the 2014-15 school year. It is a two year term, if elected. Nominations will be open through May 2; the elections will be held May 4-8 in the front office from 7:30 am - 3:30 pm each of those days.
Salem Junior High will publish its first ever Creative Journal planned and organized by Mrs. Huhtala's Creative Writing Class. We are looking for artistic entries from students. Entries may include written and artistic works such as short stories, poems, 6 word memoirs, essays, and illustrations. Short story submissions must be 3 pages or less and artwork submissions must be less than an 8.5 x 11 with at least a one inch margin. Submissions are due to Mrs. Huhtala (Room 117) by May 2nd. Anonymous works and multiple entries per person are allowed.

Mrs. Kellie Roberts was awarded the Crystal Apple Award during Monday's faculty meeting. Horace Mann representatives partner with local school administrators each year to sponsor the Crystal Apple Award program for recognizing teaching excellence.
Congratulations to Gabe Bullard for being a winner in the district's school breakfast art contest. Students illustrated why eating breakfast is important and Gabe's drawing was selected as a winner. He received a bike as a prize. Way to go, Gabe!
Yesterday, the Hope Squad kicked off their duties with an annual retreat.
The Hope Squad is a group of students that provide support, encouragement, referral and resources to students who may be struggling. It requires attendance to a monthly meeting and initial training for those students involved. Students in the hope squad have been nominated by their peers as someone they would turn to in a difficult situation.
For the PTA March Madness Fundraiser, the PTA offered an ice cream party to any class that could get 100% of students in the class to return the March Madness Form. Mrs. Huhtalas Class is the only class that earned the ice cream prize!
One of Mr. Dayton's classes won the pizza party grand prize by collecting $108.
All of the money raised will stay with our school's PTA to use for the benefit of Salem Junior High.
