Only 32 and a Half Days Left!: At this time a year ago we were abruptly dismissed from school with uncertainty of when we would return. Then our hearts broke a little when we were told we would not be returning in April and May. In August, while many schools in Utah and around the country remained in remote mode, we were so grateful to be able to return to school in person face to face. This year has been uniquely challenging and in many ways uniquely rewarding. I just want to take a minute and thank all of the Salem Jr. High students, parents, teachers and staff for your support and commitment to education and learning. I think we will undoubtedly look back on this year as one of the most memorable of our lifetimes and I am glad to have spent it at Salem Jr High.
End of Level Testing: End of level testing for 8th graders began April 12 and will continue for the next 4 weeks. Students are being tested in Writing, Math, Language Arts, and Science. 9th grade students will take the ACT Aspire test on April 20th and 21st. This test assesses understanding of core standards in Reading, Writing, English, Math, and Science. It is a good tool to help students and parents monitor progress towards a successful ACT test that they will take in high school.
Closed Campus: Just a reminder that Salem Jr High is a closed campus. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds from the time they arrive in the morning until the time they leave at the end of the day. This includes lunch time, meaning no drink runs, no being picked up by high school friends or siblings and no walking to Stokes for lunch. The only exception to this is if a student is checked out at the office by a parent or someone formally designated by the parent in I-campus.
Tardy Policy: Please check I-campus for your students grades and attendance. Tardiness creates a distraction to the classroom atmosphere and learning. We will now be adding lunch detentions in addition to early morning detention as part of our tardy reduction repertoire. Students who continue to have excessive tardiness will be required to serve lunch detentions to make up tardy's during term 4.
Spring Related Issues: At this time of year with trees budding, flowers blooming and sunny warm spring weather we have found it helpful to remind all our students of a couple of things that seem to increase in April and May. First, we remind everyone to please follow the school dress code. The dress code is created by the school district board of education to help set an academic tone and promote a learning environment. Second, we remind students that public displays of affection, like kissing, hand holding or amorous hugs are not permitted. Again, the reason is to help maintain the right atmosphere where high levels of learning and socially appropriate interactions for a school setting are the norm.
