Cave Art with Mr. Shaffer

Submitted by sam.mcgrath on Fri, 01/25/2019 - 14:06

Students in Drawing 1 today had a hands-on lesson about the history of drawing and the purpose it has always served people. The goal of the lesson is to demonstrate the important role that art and drawing have played in human history. This is a foundational lesson that Mr. Shaffer uses to set the tone and expectation for his new classes this semester. Kids get to have fun and learn something new while exercising their creativity.

Mr. Shaffer's approach to teaching students goes beyond lecture. He takes his students through virtual tours of caves with some of the most iconic drawings known and discusses their importance. Next, every student gets a piece of charcoal that they can use to create their own "cave drawings" around the room on brown paper. Kids laugh and share ideas as they tell stories or communicate what they love with their drawings.

S.E.L.F.I.E. Week at SaJHS

Submitted by sam.mcgrath on Fri, 01/18/2019 - 08:40

Last Thursday, students here at SaJHS had a special speaker come to our school to talk to them about mental health and the importance of stepping away from their phones and making real connections with people. He encouraged them to talk to people and interact with their peers more often. In support of that, our counseling office organized a campaign for this week called Take a SELFIE.

The Take a SELFIE campaign encouraged kids to step away from their technology for a week and work on themselves and their interpersonal relationships. They have been engaged in activities this week in groups or playing interactive or collaborative games to encourage them to enjoy each other's company.

Students also have the opportunity to memorize positive, uplifting quotes to enter a drawing to win a prize.

Holly Hickman wins school art contest

Submitted by sam.mcgrath on Fri, 12/21/2018 - 10:58

Congratulations to Holly Hickman who won first place in a school art contest run by Mr. Shaffer and the art department. The theme for the contest was Spartan Strong. Cooper Christiansen took third place and Paris Johnson placed second. Holly's piece along with her statement wowed the judges.

Here is Holly's statement:

The title of my artwork is "Victorious." It's a semi-realistic drawing done in pen ink using the inking techniques. The main subject of this drawing is the boy holding a hawk and a Spartan flag. My drawing expresses a personal victory, as the boy is standing over his "demons." Salem itself inspired me in this drawing, that is why I included Mt. Nebo in the background, the hawk to represent the Salem Hills SkyHawks, and the flag with the Salem Junior High logo on it. My goal for this artwork is to represent Salem, but also to challenge myself as an artist. This drawing was definitely a challenge, and it really showed me what I can do, and where I am as far as my skill level.

Holly won an Amazon gift card and will have her work on display at the district office.
