Term 1 reading scores

Earlier this month, all the students here at SaJHS took a reading test in their English class. The reading test, called the HMH Reading Inventory, is an adaptive test that determines students' reading level and assigns a Lexile score. Each grade has a Lexile goal where they should be at the end of the year to be considered on grade level. As you can see with the attached image, the kids at our school scored really well on this test with the majority of students in each grade at or above grade-level benchmarks. The light green shows the percentage of students who are proficient, or on grade level. The dark green shows the percentage of students who are advanced, or above grade level.

Needless to say, we are very happy to see these numbers and will continue to work with students throughout the year to help them grow as readers.

Parents can help their students improve their reading skills by helping students find high-interest things to read. This can be with books, magazines, or any type of reading. The key is that students are more likely to read if the content matches their personal passions and interests.
