Many parents and students may wonder “What is the purpose of Journalism?”. There are many different reasons why Journalism is important. Journalism helps to keep Salem Junior High School students up to date with the important events at our school from their peers. The Journalism crew at SAJHS hosts a news show, at least four website articles, and also have three different social media accounts to keep their peers updated through their phones also. Caimbree Gordon is a seventh grader here at our school I asked her a few questions about the meaning of Journalism her response, “I think the purpose of Journalism is to get the students involved with the school. I think Journalism helps parents and students by keeping them informed.” Journalism gives the students in this class a chance to break out of their comfort zone and try things they may never thought they would do, such as writing a published article or being outgoing and participating in the news show. This is an amazing class for any student who enjoys writing and entertaining others.

Our SAJHS Journalism students are constantly working and having fun at the same time. The students are separated into three news show, website, and social media. Students rotate in these groups every two weeks and switch with other students to be able to work with everyone. This class helps students discover their independence and learn to work with others. Each student has an assignment which they needs to be completed by the end of each week. If it is not turned in on time it will affect their grade. However, the students aren’t only graded on assignments, the students are also graded on their professionalism in the class. If students are on task and are working on what they should be, they will receive a four in professionalism. If the students are off task and being disruptive they will receive a one or a two in professionalism. Journalism is an amazing chance for the students to learn independence and responsibility.
