Quarters for Kids

Salem Jr High Faculty and Students are Collecting Quarters 4 Kids now through December 14th. The money raised will help local families that are in need for Christmas. Students will turn in their change to their math teacher. The money will be collected and counted daily until December 14th.

The classes with the most money (must be at least $50.00 to count) will earn a prize.  The first place class will earn a donut and pizza party.  The second and third place classes will earn donuts for each of their classes.

Heart of a Spartan

Although Thanksgiving is over, we are still encouraging students here at the junior high to focus on the positive. Every Monday morning we set apart time for what we call Heart of a Spartan. This is an exercise that asks students to focus more on positive aspects in their lives and less on the negative. We are hoping to train their brains to be more optimistic and more grateful.

Many will recognize this as a similar program to the one they do at the high school. Our hope is to help students feel happier and more satisfied with their lives. The image above shows what we ask students to contemplate each week.

Honoring Veterans

In honor of Veteran's Day last week, our school sponsored a fundraiser for Utah's Honor Flight. The goal of the fundraiser was to raise $1000 in order to fund a trip for a veteran to go to Washington D.C. to see the war memorials that have been erected in their honor. This is one small thing that we felt we could do to honor the service that veterans have done for our country.

We told students that even if everyone donated just one dollar we would be able to send a veteran to Washington D.C. Students and their families really felt the spirit of this fundraiser and we ended on Friday with over $2000 raised which means that we will be able to sponsor two veterans and send them with Utah Honor Flight. It was so great to see students coming in to donate their money for such a great cause.

Also, we gave students the opportunity to write small notes to veterans to thank them for their service and sacrifice for our country. We had a discussion with our students about what notes of thanks and recognition can mean for someone who served in our military.

We received many notes from students which will be taken to a veteran's care facility in Payson and handed out there.
